According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara’s future at Milan will be scrutinised if the Rossoneri fail to reach a top-four finish this season.

The defending Serie A champions have had a tough start to the year, with one victory, two draws and two defeats. They have been eliminated from the Coppa Italia by Torino and lost the Supercoppa to Inter on Wednesday.

The club are assessing the future of some of their players, but according to Gazzetta, Maldini and Massara will also be under scrutiny if the Rossoneri don’t earn a Champions League spot this term.

Their summer signings are struggling to have an impact and the Rossoneri are currently four points above Roma, Lazio and Atalanta in fifth.

Milan’s big summer signing Charles De Ketelaere has failed to justify his €32m price tag so far. Yacine Adli has been struggling with paying time, while Divock Origi has been dealing with several injuries.

Maldini and Massara signed a new two-year deal last summer, but negotiations that led to their signature were quite tense, with Maldini obtaining ‘decisional power’ but not enough transfer budget to strengthen the team.

Massara has been linked with a move to Juventus in the summer and according to Gazzetta, his and Maldini’s future at the club could be in doubt if Stefano Pioli’s men fail to earn a top-four finish.
