Sevilla president Jose Castro expressed his confidence ahead of the Europa League final against Roma, noting how you ‘can’t take anything for granted’ against the Spanish side.

The Spanish club are modern experts of the Europa League, having lifted the trophy a record six times in their history, with their most recent triumph being in the 2019-20 season. They dispatched Juventus in the semi-finals, grinding out a tense 3-2 aggregate win.

Roma lifted their first ever major European honour last season in the Conference League and Mourinho is keen to lift another trophy in the Italian capital, amidst various rumours regarding his future at the club.

Speaking via Gianluca Di Marzio and Sky Sports Italia, Castro first discussed the importance of the Europa League to Sevilla.

“After such a difficult and complicated year that we’ve had, the reality is that in two months we have turned things around, we have turned the situation of the team, coach and entity around.

“We have the chance to play our seventh Europa League final. Maybe another club would have thrown it away but we didn’t, this competition is religion for us. We kept trying and we eliminated two great teams and then two other potential title aspirants like United and Juventus.”

He touched on the importance of the club’s fans.

“The team has made a change with our coach, the enthusiasm of the fans, despite the problems and the distance there are 13,000 tickets sold and surely more than 12,000 will be at the stadium to support the team.”

The Sevilla president gave his thoughts on Mourinho and Roma.

“We both have coaches with exceptional CVs but Roma also have a very important economic potential, but in the end in the Europa League, when there is Sevilla, you cannot take anything for granted.”

Finally, Castro shared his and Sevilla’s support for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico, who is currently in hospital following a serious head injury.

“I was with his family in the hospital, he is one of ours and with the passing of the hours he doesn’t seem to be getting worse. We hope everything goes well and we can win tomorrow to dedicate the victory to him.”
