FIGC director general Michele Uva has confirmed that the third UEFA tournament will permit a seventh Italian team in Europe.

UEFA recently confirmed that a new competition, tentatively named Europa League 2, would complement its namesake and the Champions League, and Uva believes it can only ‘improve’ the fans’ experience.

“The third European competition will start in 2021, the participation of smaller federations will increase and it’s also aimed at those smaller federations whose clubs don’t reach the final phases of the Champions League and Europa League.

“The third cup doesn’t increase the number of games for each individual club, but there will be more clubs involved.

“It’s clear that the players must be protected and the calendar will be studied. There won’t be more matches, but rather matches for 16 more teams.

“The third cup will start and with great satisfaction for the clubs, UEFA and the fans, starting from 2021. Italy will also have a seventh team in Europe.

“The Champions League format will stay as it is until 2024. We’ll see if there are any small changes between 2021 and 2024.

“There’s a strategic table, where everything is studied to improve the availability of football for the tens of millions of fans.

“The fans are at the crux of everything: we want them to enjoy football in the best way possible and always with great protection of the national Leagues.”
