Serie C isn’t expected to start until September 16, after a summer of confusion in the Italian lower leagues.
The third tier should consist of three divisions – north and central east, north and central west and south – of 20 teams, but Andria, Mestre, Reggiana and Vicenza all went bankrupt and couldn’t register.
In addition, Novara, Catania Siena, Pro Vercelli and Catania were all lobbying to be promoted or returned to Serie B following the bankruptcies of Avellino, Bari and Cesena.

Added to that was the advent of B teams, with Juventus taking one of the two places in Serie C.
Serie B will go ahead with just 19 teams, with one team getting a rest week each round, but reports emerging from today’s meeting of the Lega Pro state that there will be no third division football until September.
Lega Pro President Carlo Gravina confirmed that the calendar will be drawn up on September 8, with the season not beginning until the weekend of September 15-16.
