There are some things that truly could only happen in Italian football, and tonight it’s a coach throwing a focaccia at his opposition manager, causing a cut to the face.

The bizarre incident occurred after the final whistle of Montevarchi’s 3-0 home defeat to Cesena in Serie C, the third division of Italian football.

While Cesena coach Domenico Toscano was giving a post-match interview to local press, Montevarchi boss Roberto Malotti first hurled insults at his counterpart and then hurled his dinner.

Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport claim Malotti threw a focaccina, causing a cut to Toscano’s face that drew blood.

A focaccina is smaller and harder than a classic focaccia, more like a sandwich roll, which is why it was able to do damage.

That wasn’t all, as Malotti continued shouting: “I am going to beat you up, sooner or later.”

Directors and journalists tried to keep the pair physically separated and prevent the launch of any other potentially dangerous foodstuffs.

Montevarchi directors made a formal apology to Toscano, who had been celebrating a fourth consecutive Cesena victory until the unfortunate bread-based incident.
