Monday’s Serie B clash between Bari and Genoa at the Stadio San Nicola became one of the games with the highest attendance in Italy’s second division with almost 50,000 fans in the stands.

Boxing Day in Serie B made history thanks to the match between Bari and Genoa at the Stadio San Nicola on Monday.

Almost 50,000 fans, precisely 48.877, were in the stands to watch two of the best teams in the league this term.

It didn’t end well for the hosts who suffered a 2-1 loss. Genoa’s George Puscas opened the account after just two minutes, but Morocco international Walid Cheddira levelled the score before the break.

Albert Gudmundsson scored the winner at minute 68, helping Alberto Gilardino seal his third win in four games in charge of Genoa. The 2006 Italy World Cup winner was appointed on December 6 to replace Alexander Blessin.

Bari have now leapfrogged Bari and sit third in the Serie B table with 33 points, six below leaders Frosinone coached by another Italy legend, Fabio Grosso.

The Serie B match with the highest attendance remains Napoli-Vicenza in 2003 when 64,367 fans watched the Partenopei secure a 2-1 win at the Stadio San Paolo, now Stadio Maradona.
