He is the only player so far in Serie A or B to test positive after contact training began.

The medical protocol was changed to ensure only the player who is positive will be quarantined for 14 days, while the rest of the squad remains in a training camp for the same period, unable to leave other than for matches.

They must have rapid-response tests the day of the game to ensure everyone is free from the virus.

Venezia had threatened to pull out of the Serie B match entirely due to the uncertainty over exactly what the protocol was, but today’s statement confirms they are ready to go ahead.

“Venezia FC announce that the squad has just left Mestre for the journey to Trieste. The departure was made possible thanks to the local hospital, who at dawn this morning performed swab tests at the hotel where the team was in a fiduciary isolation.

“Having said that, there are still some objective critical issues that need to be resolved before we can play tonight’s match at the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste.”
