Salernitana have the upper hand in the first leg of the Serie B relegation playout, but Venezia pulled one back in stoppages.

Venezia can be pleased with the situation, considering they were decimated by injuries and players away on international duty.

This tie was not meant to go ahead at all, but was hastily re-organised after Palermo partially won an appeal against their demotion to last place for financial irregularities.

This tie was not meant to go ahead at all, but was hastily re-organised after Palermo partially won an appeal against their demotion to last place for financial irregularities.

Salernitana broke through with a 2-0 lead by the 25th minute, thanks to a Milan Djuric header and Lamin Jallow strike from the Djuric knock-down.

Venezia were furious, as even after viewing a potential handball incident on VAR, the referee opted against a penalty.

Marco Pinato and Cristiano Lombardi skimmed the woodwork, as the Lagunari poured forward in the second half, while Marco Modolo missed a sitter.

They eventually did get one back in stoppages with Gianmarco Zigoni’s powerful header on a Mauro Coppolaro cross.

In fact, Alessandro Micai prevented a last-gasp equaliser thanks to his save on Alessandro Rossi.

The second leg is in Venice on June 9.

Salernitana 2-1 Venezia

Djuric 14 (S), Jallow 25 (S), Zigoni 91 (V)
