The 2021-22 Serie B season will open with two World Cup winners facing off, as Gigi Buffon’s Parma visit coach Fabio Grosso’s Frosinone.

The campaign is due to begin on Friday August 20 at 19.30 UK time (20.30 local time) at the Stadio Stirpe.

While Buffon is still playing and has returned to his first club Parma, Grosso retired in 2012.

Both were instrumental in the Italy squad that lifted the 2006 World Cup in Germany and will have a reunion on the touchline next month.

Grosso took over as Frosinone coach from another World Cup winner, Alessandro Nesta, in March.

This game also represents a huge early promotion showdown, as both Parma and Frosinone will be among the favourites to climb back into Serie A next term.
