Empoli have 11 players and two staff members positive for COVID, and their previous game against Cremonese had been postponed.

That used up their only ‘free pass’ predicted by the COVID protocol.

For this reason, the game against Chievo was not officially postponed, and the visitors had to turn up to the Stadio Castellani, knowing Empoli wouldn’t be there.

The Sporting Judge will now decide whether to give Empoli a 3-0 defeat by default or, most likely, reschedule the game.

Meantime Monza were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Pescara and find themselves six points behind second-placed Lecce.

Eugenio Corini’s side sealed a 1-0 win away at Pisa to move one point behind Empoli with the Tuscans, who have two games in hand.
