Serie B side Lecce have officially sacked coach Eugenio Corini after failing to make the promotion play-off final.

The Salentini ended the regular season in fourth place and had until the final couple of weeks been the favourites for the second automatic promotion spot.

That was eventually taken by Salernitana and then Lecce crashed out of the promotion play-off semi-finals to Venezia.

Corini had only signed a three-year contract with Lecce last summer.

“We decided to remove Eugenio Corini from his post,” explained Lecce President Saverio Sticchi Damiani.

“It is not a decision based on emotion after the Venezia game, but a clear and lucid evaluation of the whole season.”

The Serie B promotion play-off final will be a Veneto derby between Venezia and Cittadella.
