Serie A Highlights: Udinese 2-0 Torino

There were big players sitting out bans for both sides, Gerard Deulofeu and Bremer plus Toro coach Ivan Juric, with Andrea Belotti, Koffi Djidji and Mohamed Fares injured. January signing Pablo Marí was thrown straight into the starting XI for the Friulani after his loan from Arsenal.

Beto only grazed his head to a dangerous free kick, while Mato Jajalo saw his strike charged down after a sweeping Udinese move.

Antonio Sanabria came sliding in a second too late to connect with the Dennis Praet assist from six yards.

Torino had a huge chance with a very clever free kick routine, it was passed low around the wall for Josip Brekalo, forcing a desperate Marco Silvestri save. He was marginally offside, but the idea was new and fresh.

Isaac Success was found by a smart Beto slide-rule pass, but Brekalo came sliding in for a decisive Megrim Vojvoda block in the penalty area.

Beto had a huge chance straight after the restart when running clear from midfield, but Vanja Milinkovic-Savic made a big save one-on-one.

Torino switched to four at the back and created a big chance on the counter-attack, Wilfried Singo’s strike fingertipped over the bar.

There was controversy on 66 minutes when Brandon Soppy went down under a Tommaso Pobega challenge in the box and the referee opted to book him for simulation, which seemed incredibly harsh, even if it might not have been a penalty either.

Vojvoda fired inches over from an intelligent Dennis Praet cross after debutant Pietro Pellegri’s back-heel flick.

The game was transformed in stoppages by two events. First, Rolando Mandragora received his second yellow card for a late tackle on Mato Jajalo. Secondly, on the resulting free kick, Milinkovic-Savic was expecting a cross, but Molina smartly curled it directly into the near bottom corner instead.

Milinkovic-Savic was all at sea and moments after that he brought down Ignacio Pussetto for a penalty, which the Argentine also converted into the roof of the net.
