It somehow ended goalless in a hard-fought match with numerous scoring opportunities for both Udinese and Frosinone.
The Friulani were still decimated by injuries to Simone Pafundi, Gerard Deulofeu, Kingsley Ehizibue, Enzo Ebosse, Brenner and Adam Masina, but Lazar Samardzic was solidly back in the squad after his failed transfer to Inter. The Canarini made numerous signings on deadline day and caused an upset with last week’s win over Atalanta, welcoming back goalkeeper Stefano Turati from his ban.
Walid Cheddira prodded over the bar from six yards on a pull-back from the by-line, then Frosinone went even closer moments later, a ball rolled across the face of goal for Matias Soule to clip the far post from point-blank range.
The hosts fought back, Florian Thauvin’s volley stinging Turati’s gloves from a tight angle, then Lorenzo Lucca getting no power to the tap-in from a pull-back.
Frosinone were awarded a penalty on 28 minutes for a chaotic Joao Ferreira challenge on Gelli, but it was revoked because Luca Mazzitelli was offside in the build-up.
Marco Silvestri got a fingertip to the Soule roll across the face of goal, but Udinese received a spot-kick straight after the restart for a coming together between Ilario Monterisi and Lucca. However, after the on-field VAR review, the referee saw that if anything it was Lucca’s foul.
Moments later, Udinese had the ball in the net thanks to a comical Simone Romagnoli own goal as he came sliding in from six yards, but it was disallowed because Thauvin had already run it out of play before the pull-back.
Lazar Samardzic sprinted forward on the counter to force a fingertip save from Turati, then Lucca nodded a Thauvin cross over the bar.
Frosinone thought they had found the breakthrough, only for a Marco Silvestri reaction save on Abdou Harroui and Christian Kabasele flinging himself in the path of the Cheddira follow-up.
Silvestri just about managed to avoid fouling Cheddira, managing to send him wide on the counter-attack.
