It took a while to break Torino down, but Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez and a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty eventually grabbed the victory for Inter, while Perr Schurrs was stretchered off.
The Nerazzurri lost top spot with a 2-2 draw against Bologna before the break for international duty, so took no chances with their full-strength XI here, missing injured Marko Arnautovic and Juan Cuadrado. Toro had two points from the last four games and went into this without Duvan Zapata, Yann Karamoh, Koffi Djidji, Alessandro Buongiorno and Brandon Soppy.
Lautaro Martinez failed to make the most of an early Schuurs error with a heavy first touch and Marcus Thuram fired straight at Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, as did Samuele Ricci at the other end with Yann Sommer.
It was Sommer who had to make the first real save on 35 minutes, flying to palm away the Demba Seck curler from the edge of the area.
He also had to pluck a Pietro Pellegri header out of the air, but there was bad news for Torino when Perr Schuurs was stretchered off in tears with a seemingly very serious knee injury.
Inter took the lead soon after, as substitute Denzel Dumfries made an immediate impact, selling Ricardo Rodriguez a dummy to roll across from the right, as Thuram was ready to sweep in first-time from 12 yards into the far bottom corner with his right boot.
The second goal came from a set play, Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner flicked on by Francesco Acerbi for the Lautaro Martinez header from close range.
Thuram twisted and turned, but Saba Sazonov eventually made the decisive block. Torino’s basic problem remains clear, this was the fourth consecutive Serie A match without finding the back of the net.
Instead, in stoppages Ivan Ilic brought down Mkhitaryan during a sprint into the box and Calhanoglu converted the resulting penalty.
Torino 0-3 Inter
Thuram 59 (I), Lautaro Martinez 67 (I), Calhanoglu pen 95 (I)
