Serie A matches on January 4, 2023, will start with a minute’s silence in honour of Brazilian legend Pele, the FIGC announced.

Pele died in Brazil on Thursday, December 29, aged 82.

Italian football will honour the former Brazilian striker by holding a minute’s silence before today’s friendlies involving Serie A clubs and games in Italy’s top flight scheduled for January 4, 2023.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said that football “has become the most loved and played game in the world” thanks to Pele.

“In him, millions of people recognised themselves in a beautiful story of redemption and great passion. His class will shine in our memories forever.”

Serie A clubs, players and legends have paid respect to the Brazilian legend on social media while former Inter and Milan striker Ronaldo wrote a letter for La Gazzetta dello Sport where he recalled a meeting he had with O’Rey in 2000 after his second knee injury.

Pele had never played in Europe but came close to joining Inter in the last ’50s and scored a goal in a 4-1 win against Italy in the 1970 World Cup Final.
