Serie A title could be assigned by a play-off next season

After the Scudetto went down to the wire, the Lega Serie A has suggested assigning the title with a play-off rather than head-to-head record.

Milan were crowned Champions of Italy this season after finishing two points clear of Inter thanks to a 3-0 win away to Sassuolo.

However, a draw against Sassuolo would’ve been enough for the title, because they had a superior head-to-head record with their rivals.

If teams finish level on points in Serie A, their position is decided by head-to-head record, then goal difference in a head-to-head, goal difference overall and finally lots are drawn.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Lega Serie A meeting held yesterday saw clubs raise the possibility of changing the rules to make for an even more exciting finale to the campaign.

If the top two are level on points, then the Scudetto will be assigned using a one-off match.

The Serie A title has been decided by a play-off only once before, Bologna beating Inter 2-0 on neutral turf in 1964.

Most leagues separate teams by goal difference first, without taking head-to-head record into account.
