Serie A television rights have been sold to the MENA region after a three-year gap, but talk of reducing the league to 18 teams is called ‘premature.’

The Lega Serie A announced today via President Lorenzo Casini that the television rights for Italy’s top flight matches has been sold to Abu Dhabi Media for the MENA region.

This refers to a group of countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

It ends a three-year blackout in the region and guarantees fans in that area will be able to see Serie A games for the next three years.

Casini explained the deal will be worth at least €79m over the three years, but based on sales could rise to almost €100m.

There have been suggestions from the FIGC that Serie A should be reduced from 20 teams to 18, therefore making the fixture list less packed and helping to cut costs.

“It is premature to talk about that,” insisted Casini. “It would also have a knock-on effect for Serie B and Lega Pro, so it certainly cannot be for next year.”

  1. They should really reduce to 16 teams. Anything more is just wasted money and games. The fixture list is filled. No need for useless matches being played domestically.
