Luis Cavanda [Lazio]
A thoroughly modern wing-back display saw him put in a cross for the opener which was as cute as the Hello Kitty and Milan’s red devil coupling. Later he repeated the trick again for Miroslav Klose to head home. Outstanding.
Kalidou Koulibaly [Napoli]
Looking like he had never been away he seemed to be everywhere in defence. Patrolling the centre, pushing down the left flank, plus covering Cristian Maggio when he moved upfield. At times left the Viola looking like elephants on stilts. Positive.
Raul Albiol [Napoli]
Worked well in tandem with Koulibaly and cleared up several Fiorentina interventions with good solid tackling and positioning which made any Viola attacks as improbable as Andrea Dossena doing a Bobby Moore in Harrods. Reliable.
Sinisa Andelkovic [Palermo]
The Slovenian defender ruled the left flank and was always there to present an outlet if needed. Made several punishing runs into the hosts’ half but never once allowed his probing to deflect from his tackles and interceptions. Exceptional.
Dries Mertens [Napoli]
Caused problems for the visitors throughout and scored the opener on the counter with a fabulous curler into the far corner from the edge of the box. Continued to trouble and set Marek Hamsik up for Napoli’s second. Menacing.
Diego Perotti [Genoa]
Full of running and prompting he was at the fulcrum of Genoa’s almost constant attacks. Constantly looking for a killer pass, he was rewarded when he got on the end of a swift counter attack and his sublime pass set up Iago Falque for the second goal. Unswerving.
Ivaylo Chochev [Palermo]
A real pedigree performance by the Bulgarian midfielder, who was always alert to the half chance. Got possession, put his foot on the ball and also scored his Serie A debut goal with a perfectly placed header. Superb.
Jose Mauri [Parma]
Like a troublesome wasp he was always looking to hurt where he could, setting up attacks and finishing them off. On one swift counter-attacking sting he found himself in space to side-foot home the winner. Excellent.
Rodrigo Palacio [Inter]
Like an angry baboon, he was relentless when attacking Verona’s defence scoring one and producing an assist. Setting up Mauro Icardi for number one with a fine pass his Argentinean teammate did the same and Palacio scored himself from close up. Persistent.
M’Baye Niang [Genoa]
He was a real thorn in the side of the visitors. Starting from the whistle he pushed to get on the score sheet with several notable efforts before finding space to collect Facundo Roncaglia’s pass and slide home from close-range. Unrelenting.
