Made a couple of crucial interventions, scored a goal and kept the visiting attack at bay with relative ease. His vital opener came via an Inter mistake and the Italian international seized on it to beat Samir Handanovic from close range. Commanding.
Cristian Zapata [Milan]
The Colombian was a colossus at the back, blocking and intercepting the dangerous Andrea Belotti on several occasions. Kept the Torino strike force quiet and never allowed any real danger to develop. Intimidating.
Luca Antonelli [Milan]
An effective outlet on the left, his overlaps caused several problems but he never neglected his defensive duties. Scored the winner from a corner when he controlled a Juraj Kucka nod down and spun to slot home from six yards. Menacing.
Fernando [Sampdoria]
The Brazilian showed he meant business from the off when an early, fierce attempt hit the bar. Leading a dominant Samp from the midfield he struck another just wide before some neat work with Lorenzo de Silvestri ended with his goal. Forceful.
Giuseppe Pezzella [Palermo]
A highly, energetic performance from the 18-year-old Neapolitan, who was making just his second appearance for Palermo and showed no nerves. Never stopped running and trying to set up attacks, only for his colleagues to be on a different wavelength. Sensational.
Lucas Castro [Chievo]
The Argentinian was the playmaker for the hosts, boss and organising attempts on goal throughout. His ingenuity was best seen when after winning a midfield skirmish he started a move before finishing it with a goal from a diving header. Assertive.
Miralem Pjanic [Roma]
Won the battle for midfield with his control and knowhow. Scored the crucial second goal when his first effort from a free kick hit the wall only for him to hammer home the rebound into the bottom corner. Subtle.
Sandro [Juventus]
A tower of strength when defending and just as powerful when attacking, especially on the counter, with his intelligence and pace. Seems to have grabbed the left wing-back role and made it his own and on this showing you can see why. Tigerish.
Gregoire Defrel [Sassuolo]
A busy afternoon for the Frenchman who, in dreadful conditions won a penalty, converted by Domenico Berardi, then scored his own goal. Cleverly controlling a Nicola Sansone pass he slotted the ball past Erita Berisha to make it 2-0. Comprehensive.
Stephan El Shaarawy [Roma]
The Pharaoh was the star of the show, scored two and worried the hosts throughout. Scoring the opener with a stunning curler from 30 yards, his second goal saw him in the right place at the right time. Supreme.
