Following a four-day feast of football in Serie A Dave Taylor picks his best XI from Week 24’s games.

Gianluca Pegolo [Sassuolo]

The 32-year-old was outstanding and if not for him the Neroverdi would have conceded more. Although he saved several solid shots including screamers from Gonzalo Higuain and Lorenzo Insigne there was little he could do about the two goals. Exceptional.

Gino Peruzzi [Catania]

A superb display of what a modern right-back should be, as he unyieldingly defended while blocking Senad Lulic at every turn. He also overlapped well and lent weight to the attack, even scoring the final goal. Outstanding.

Walter Samuel [Inter]

The Wall is back up and as strong, resilient and concrete as ever. Never gave an inch and led the backline with his usual precision and made several crucial interventions shackling Mario Gomez and Alessandro Matri superbly. Dobermanish

Nicolas Spolli [Catania]

Along with Giuseppe Bellusci he absolutely ruled the centre of defence keeping Miroslav Klose under the cosh all game. Moved up field on occasions and scored the Elefanti’s second goal on one of his ventures. Dominant.

Cristian Molinaro [Parma]

The best player on the field and in only his first full game since arriving in January from Stuttgart he continually dictated the pace from the left flank. In a perfect performance he opened the scoring after just nine minutes. Ideal.

Miralem Pjanic [Roma]

The Bosnian was in top form with some superb passes and elegant touches. He set up the first from a corner before assisting on the second via a free-kick and finally scoring himself with a right-footer. Stylish.

Omar El Kaddouri [Torino]

Was a real thorn in the side of Verona, especially in the second half. He made two perfect passes for Ciro Immobile and Alessio Cerci’s goals before his elegant strike for the edge of the penalty area. Fluent.

Andrea Pirlo [Juventus]

What can you say? Irrepressible as always he sprayed balls around effortlessly and it was from two free-kicks that he set up the goals by Claudio Marchisio and Federico Llorente. Phew.

Lorenzo Insigne [Napoli]

The visitors’ man of man of the match embarrassed his former teammate Paolo Cannavaro with his turns and tricks. After a couple of attempts he eventually beat Pegolo with a perfectly placed ball into the far corner. Uncontainable.

Alberto Gilardino [Genoa]

Inspired his side’s comeback scoring a brace. His first came from a perfect pass by Ivan Fetfatzidis for his 169th Serie A goal while his second arrived thanks to his alertness as he pounced on a rebound to slot home. Attentive.

Mattia Destro [Roma]

Took some time to get into the game but when he did he was electrifying, scoring a brace. His first saw him smack home a perfect header into the bottom corner while his second was a screamer under the bar. Thrilling.

Special mentions: Mauro Icardi [Inter], Blerim Dzemaili [Napoli], Alessio Cerci [Torino] Rodrigo Palacio [Inter], Emerson [Livorno], Faouzi Ghoulam [Napoli], Kwadwo Asamoah [Juventus].
