Had little to do in the first half but was kept busy in the second with a fabulous double save first from Fabio Quagliarella’s strike then Luis Muriel’s before stopping another ferocious effort from Quagliarella. Steady.

Alex Cordaz [Crotone]

Had little to do in the first half but was kept busy in the second with a fabulous double save first from Fabio Quagliarella’s strike then Luis Muriel’s before stopping another ferocious effort from Quagliarella. Steady.

Ignazio Abate [Milan]

Got down the right flank on several occasions, crossed over dangerous balls and got into good positions. Provided an assist for Suso with a lovely cutback after being released by Gianluca Lapadula. Excellent.

Bruno Alves [Cagliari]

Another fine performance from the veteran Portuguese, who showed his authority and command of most every situation. And despite being up against the tricky Cyril Thereau, his experience kept the Frenchman quiet throughout. Comprehensive.

Antonio Barreca [Torino]

Could the 21-year-old be the future of the Azzurri down the left? Certainly in this game he proved he could be with his accurate passes and ability to get forward. One of his early runs saw him bypass the opposition defence to put in a smart cross for the opener. Complete.

Darko Lazovic [Genoa]

Sensational in his anticipation and had Alex Sandro tied in knots down his right flank leaving him as useful as a flat tyre at a funeral. Set up several chances and it was from his corner that Genoa scored their third goal. Matchless.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic [Lazio]

A top-notch performance from the 21-year-old Serbian international and it was down to his dangerous play that helped Lazio win the game. After narrowly failing to score previously, he was at the end of a good move that saw him slot home from six yards.

Andrea Masiello [Atalanta]

The veteran winger was the inspiration behind with his clever football and intelligent passes, which were wasted at times by his teammates. However, he did open the scoring after just five minutes as he struck a terrific volley into the far corner of the net leaving the ‘keeper as rigid a week old salad. Devastating.

Andrea Candreva [Inter]

After narrowly missing once chance he pounced on a mistake from Ciprian Tatarusanu and he simply slotted the ball past him. Seems to be experiencing a new breath of life under the new manager and hustled Fiorentina throughout. Overwhelming.

Suso [Milan]

A man of the match display from the Spaniard, who scored a cracker produced an assist and was faster than a rabbit on roller skates. First he set up Gianluca Lapadula’s goal with a low cross then curled home his own delicious goal from 12 yards. Irreplaceable.

Gianluca Lapadula [Milan]

Scored the opener after just 15 minutes sweeping home a low cross before going onto score a second and have a big hand in Suso’s goal. Added pace and movement to Milan’s attack and looked creative with the ball. Innovated.

Giovanni Simeone [Genoa]

It’s not everyday you put two past the reigning champions but Cholito did it and in fine style too. Following a brilliant double save by Gianluigi Buffon the forlorn ‘keeper could do nothing as Simeone swept the opener home. For his second he met a Darko Lazovic cross and netted with a diving header. Sensational.

Special mentions: Felipe Anderson [Lazio], Ciro Immobile [Lazio], Iago Falque [Torino], Darko Lazovic [Genoa], Davide Zappacosta [Torino], Armando Izzo [Genoa], Alejandro Dario Gomez [Atalanta], Luca Rigoni [Genoa], Mauro Icardi [Inter], Ivan Perisic [Inter], Marcelo Brozovic [Inter].
