Fiorentina returned to winning ways in the league with a tough 2-1 win over Spezia thanks to goals from Krzysztof Piatek and Sofyan Amrabat.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side came into this match after an exciting 3-2 win over Atalanta in the Coppa Italia on Thursday, an important victory after the team’s form dipped in Serie A. They had only won one game of their last five ahead of this evening’s clash, so a win was a must for the Florence side.

Things have been a little more positive for Spezia recently; the Ligurian side have secured 10 points from their last five league outings, helping them create a five-point gap to the relegation zone.

Spezia started the match on the front foot, but momentum soon shifted and Fiorentina had a number of chances, peaking in the 17th minute, when they were awarded a penalty. Piatek missed the resulting spot kick, allowing Thiago Motta’s side to breathe a sigh of relief.

The Viola’s domination of the match continued as the first half progressed and their efforts were finally rewarded in the 42nd minute, when Piatek redeemed himself by netting the opening goal.

The second half started in the same fashion that the first finished in, with Fiorentina comfortably in the driving seat.

Despite a number of Spezia changes in the second half, they could do little to turn the tide of the game around, until things changed in the 75th minute, when Kevin Agudelo found an important equaliser.

Fiorentina reacted well, however, and they kept up the pressure. In the 89th minute, a breakthrough was finally found, when Sofyan Amrabat’s out the box shot flying into the bottom left corner, making it 2-1.

The Viola held on and Italiano’s side picked up an important three points away from home. They now sit one point behind Roma in the Serie A table.
