Spezia suffered a blow in their hopes to avoid relegation, flattened on home turf by Torino in their final home game of the season, including a goal from ex-Verona man Ivan Ilic.

The hosts were one point above Verona in the drop zone and had Kelvin Amian back from suspension, but Mattia Caldara joined Emil Holm, Joao Moutinho and Jacopo Sala on the treatment table. Toro were still in with a shout of eighth place and potential Conference League qualification, but Nemanja Radonjic was injured.

Aleksei Miranchuk couldn’t have come closer on 14 minutes, his strike from outside the box deflected onto the crossbar by Ethan Ampadu.

Salvatore Esposito aimed a couple of free kicks over the bar, but Torino took the lead with a stroke of luck, as Wilfried Singo’s shot on an Ivan Ilic corner took a big deflection off Przemyslaw Wisniewski to wrong-foot Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Spezia received a penalty when Alessandro Buongiorno pulled back M’Bala Nzola by the arm, but it was revoked following a VAR on-field review for the Emmanuel Gyasi handball.

Play was halted just before half-time because some people behind the Torino bench were hurling racist abuse at coach Ivan Juric, so Gyasi went over and told his own fans to stop. A statement was read out over the loudspeaker and play resumed.

Within seconds of the restart, the Granata rattled the frame of the goal for the second time, a Mergim Vojvoda strike bouncing off the base of the far post.

Dimitrios Nikolaou stung Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s gloves and Daniele Verde’s strike skimmed the far top corner, but instead Spezia fell 2-0 down.

Antonio Sanabria surged forward and was tackled, Nikola Vlasic intelligently laying it off for Samuele Ricci to blast into the top corner.

Torino ran riot, Vlasic getting down the left and pulling back for Ivan Ilic to drill low into the near bottom corner from 12 yards.

Sanabria had the ball in the net again two minutes later, but it was disallowed for his foul on Nikolaou before beating Dragowski one-on-one.

It wasn’t over, as Simone Bastoni ran to the by-line on a Kevin Agudelo pass and pulled back for Nzola to score from six yards. However, that was disallowed after a very long VAR check for offside.

Toro added further insult to injury with the last kick of the game, as Sanabria’s slide-rule pass released
