Sky Sport Italia highlights that Serie A clubs’ spending in January was the lowest in 17 years, while Premier League clubs invested €829m, including Chelsea’s €320m.

The January transfer window for Serie A clubs closed on Tuesday and was among the poorest in the last two decades.

Italian sides in the top flight spent €31m combined and, as highlighted by Transfermarkt and Sky Sport Italia, only 16 transfers came with actual spending for Serie A clubs.

Ivan Ilic’s move to Torino from Hellas Verona for €16m was the most expensive purchase in Italy followed by Nedim Bajrami’s transfer to Sassuolo from Empoli for €6m. It’s the same fee spent by Udinese to buy Matheus Martins who has gone out on loan at Watford until the end of the season.

Premier League clubs dominated the January transfer window, spending €829m. Chelsea alone invested €320m in new signings, more than the other top four European leagues combined.

French clubs in Ligue 1 spent €133m, followed by Bundesliga with €67m, Serie A and La Liga with €31m.
