Lega Serie A has formalised the introduction of a Scudetto play-off, so what happens if three teams finish the season tied on points at the top?

Calcio e Finanza details how a Federal Council meeting was held by Lega Serie A yesterday to formalise a number of rule changes ahead of the 2022-23 season, including the permanent introduction of five substitutions. What has generated the most discussion, however, is the re-introduction of a Scudetto play-off match.

Should two teams finish the season tied on points at the top, a play-off match will be held, and this will be decided by a penalty shoot-out should the game end in a draw at the end of the 90 minutes.

In the event of a three-team tie at the top, a separate table would be drawn up between the three to decide which two would qualify for the play-off.

The Scudetto has only been decided by a play-off once before in history, back in 1964. The match was between Bologna and Inter and the Rossoblu came out 2-0 winners.

  1. What this is mean?

“In the event of a three-team tie at the top, a separate table would be drawn up between the three to decide which two would qualify for the play-off.”

  2. They will make a group consist of the same team with each play 2 other clubs. then position 1 and 2 go to play off

  3. What if the three teams have different points in the 3-team table? Would the Scudetto go to the top team, or will there be a play-off between the top two regardless of their points?
