Serie A has scrapped Boxing Day football from its calendar as next season marks the return of a festive winter break.

Corriere della Sera reports ‘the experiment has already failed’ after only one campaign of games over Christmas in the Italian top flight.

However, the newspaper explains the request came from broadcasters, who were finding it ‘difficult’ to sell subscriptions in January with two weekends of no matches.

The 2019-20 season, meanwhile, will start a week later on August 25 – coinciding with an opening ceremony in Turin – and end on May 24.

As for this term, the Derby della Mole between Juve and Torino may need to be rescheduled as the 70th anniversary of the Superga air disaster also falls on May 4.
