History was made with the first female referee for a Serie A match, but the star of the show was Armand Lauriente with a goal, an assist and dominant performance as Sassuolo crushed Salernitana.

Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi became the first ever woman to officiate a Serie A men’s game. The Neroverdi were still dealing with an injury crisis, missing Domenico Berardi, Gregoire Defrel, Hamed Junior Traore, Mert Muldur and Filippo Romagna. Meanwhile, Salernitana were without Franck Ribery, Emil Bohinen and Federico Fazio.

Watch the highlights here.

Sassuolo had a very aggressive start and after a few chances, took the lead when Armand Lauriente took on Dylan Bronn, who backed off too much, giving him the space to pick his spot with a right-foot sweep into the far bottom corner.

Kristian Thorstvedt almost had a second moments later, pouncing on one error, sending another defender to ground with his shimmy, but Luigi Sepe made the desperate save from point-blank range.

Andrea Consigli denied Boulaye Dia from point-blank range at the near post following an inspired Giulio Maggiore through ball, while Laurentie almost got a second when sprinting away from his own half, but Sepe and Matteo Lovato did enough to put him off for the finish.

Referee Ferrieri Caputi pointed to the spot when Emil Ceide squirmed through three defenders, eventually going down under a Maggiore challenge that seemed to just catch his ankle. Andrea Pinamonti converted to double Sassuolo’s lead.

Davide Frattesi just failed to connect with a Maxime Lopez through ball, then Consigli made a fantastic reaction save on Krzysztof Piatek’s header, but it wouldn’t have counted as the Salernitana striker had pushed his marker.

Sassuolo added a third when substitute Agustin Alvarez released Thorstvedt with a perfectly-weighted through ball, the midfielder firing into the far top corner across the goalkeeper.

Lauriente set up Thorstvedt again to force a Sepe save, but there was little the goalkeeper could do when Lauriente rolled across for Abdou Harroui to sweep home from 15 yards.

It still wasn’t over, as Sepe did all he could on Agustin Alvarez, but there was little hope of getting the Janis Antiste rebound too.

Sassuolo 5-0 Salernitana

Lauriente 12 (Sas), Pinamonti pen 39 (Sas), Thorstvedt 53 (Sas), Harroui 76 (Sas), Antiste 92 (Sas)
