Duvan Zapata and Josip Ilicic turned on the style for Atalanta to secure a 3-1 victory away to Sampdoria, despite the Ciccio Caputo opener.
The injury crisis persisted for La Dea, who missed Rafael Toloi, Berat Djimsiti, Merih Demiral, Matteo Pessina, Robin Gosens and Hans Hateboer, while coach Gian Piero Gasperini was also suspended after his red card for dissent in the draw with Udinese. Bartosz Bereszynski sat out a ban for Samp, with Tommaso Augello, Mikkel Damsgaard and Valerio Verre out of action.
Duvan Zapata’s angled drive skimmed the far post in the opening minutes, then Joakim Maehle missed a sitter with his free header at the back post on Davide Zappacosta’s cross.
However, it was Samp who broke the deadlock when Francesco Caputo sprung the offside trap from Morten Thorsby’s assist and beat on-rushing Juan Musso into the far bottom corner.
Atalanta drew level, as Zappacosta pulled back from the by-line for Duvan Zapata’s header from six yards at the near post, but it took a decisive deflection off Kristoffer Askildsen.
The pair combined again to turn the game around completely, another Zappacosta cross from the right for Duvan Zapata’s header.
Caputo sprung the offside trap again, but Juan Musso rushed off his line and made himself big for the save one-on-one.
Samp striker Caputo hit the side-netting, while Rade Dragusin made a decisive block on the Ruslan Malinovskyi counter-attack.
Duvan Zapata didn’t make the most of good work from Maehle and Josip Ilicic, while Dragusin made another crucial tackle on Roberto Piccoli.
Atalanta finally got their third to kill the game off in stoppages, as Ilicic ran to the by-line, skinned Yoshida and curled into the far top corner from the tightest of angles.
