Sampdoria continue their slide towards Serie B after failing to take their chances in a goalless stalemate with Salernitana.
The Blucerchiati plummeted to last place after a run of two draws from eight rounds and were decimated going into this dogfight, with Manuel Gabbiadini suspended, Sam Lammers, Jeison Murillo, Ignacio Pussetto and Andrea Conti injured, so Jese Rodriguez got his first start. New Salernitana coach Paulo Sousa got his first win beating Monza 3-0 last week and his only absentees were William Troost-Ekong and Federico Fazio.
Abdelhamid Sabiri’s curler was not far wide of the top corner, while Emil Audero stood his ground one-on-one when Antonio Candreva sprung the offside trap on a smart Grigoris Kastanos assist.
Jese Rodriguez’s effort was deflected by Flavius Daniliuc, with Medhi Leris testing Guillermo Ochoa on the rebound, then Tommaso Augello blasted over the bar and Alessandro Zanoli fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Audero needed a great fingertip save to push Junior Sambia’s free kick round the base of the far post after it split the Samp wall.
An unhappy Dejan Stankovic pulled the plug on Sabiri’s game after just 35 minutes to introduce defender Koray Gunter, moving Zanoli to the wing.
Piatek tested Audero from distance, but Samp started to step up the pressure with a Michael Cuisance cross-shot skimming the crossbar and Fabio Quagliarella turning wide on his 550th Serie A appearance.
There was a double chance when Ochoa parried the Leris attempt and Cuisance hit the crossbar on the rebound, though the midfielder had wandered offside.
Gunter made a decisive block in the six-yard box after a corner was knocked on, while Piatek couldn’t keep his chest and volley down.
Sampdoria 0-0 Salernitana
