Sampdoria continue their slide towards Serie B after failing to take their chances in a goalless stalemate with Salernitana.
The Blucerchiati plummeted to last place after a run of two draws from eight rounds and were decimated going into this dogfight, with Manuel Gabbiadini suspended, Sam Lammers, Jeison Murillo, Ignacio Pussetto and Andrea Conti injured, so Jese Rodriguez got his first start. Piatek tested Audero from distance, but Samp started to step up the pressure with a Michael Cuisance cross-shot skimming the crossbar and Fabio Quagliarella turning wide on his 550th Serie A appearance.
There was a double chance when Ochoa parried the Leris attempt and Cuisance hit the crossbar on the rebound, though the midfielder had wandered offside.
Gunter made a decisive block in the six-yard box after a corner was knocked on, while Piatek couldn’t keep his chest and volley down.
