Milan are back in crisis mode after fumbling a lead for this dramatic 2-2 draw with Pippo Inzaghi’s rock bottom Salernitana, as Luka Jovic snatched a point and Fikayo Tomori went off injured.
The Rossoneri had Ismael Bennacer back in the starting XI after 226 days and knee ligament surgery, while Davide Calabria returned from suspension, but Noah Okafor, Tommaso Pobega, Malick Thiaw, Pierre Kalulu and Mattia Caldara were still out of action. The hosts replaced director Morgan De Sanctis with Walter Sabatini this week and there were already reports Pippo Inzaghi could be fired after six weeks in charge. Giulio Maggiore was suspended with Guillermo Ochoa still injured.
Mike Maignan had to scramble across when Boulaye Dia redirected a wayward Bradaric attempt, but Milan took the lead on a chaotic corner.
It was flicked on to Rafael Leao at the back post, his chest and roll across took a double deflection for Fikayo Tomori to nod in from close range.
Leao’s disguised pass sent Theo Hernandez clear on goal, but Benoit Costil timed the interception perfectly to pluck it off his feet.
Maignan had to be on his toes when Bennacer flicked on an Antonio Candreva cross, risking an own goal, while Candreva also then blasted just over.
After another spectacular Maignan save to deny Kastanos sliding in, Salernitana got a deserved equaliser on the resulting corner. Candreva’s cross found Federico Fazio for a towering header away from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Costil parried a Theo Hernandez free kick routine and Jan-Carlo Simic came on for the not fully fit Simon Kjaer in the second half.
Salernitana also lost a key player moments later, as Boulaye Dia pulled up clutching his hamstring mid-sprint.
Costil was also right behind a Ruben Loftus-Cheek control and half-volley, but Milan were struck by a double disaster in one swift move.
First Tomori collapsed clutching his thigh and as the move continued, Maignan completely mis-read the flight of the Candreva strike at the base of the near post and let it squirm through his gloves for Salernitana to take the lead.
Maignan tried to make up for that howler with a flying fingertip save on Pasquale Mazzocchi to push it over the bar.
Luka Jovic had a double opportunity to equalise on 82 minutes, first the header on a Leao cross and then the follow-up both parried from close range by Costil.
At the 90th minute, Milan managed to equalise as Olivier Giroud knocked down the Davide Calabria cross, Jovic let it bounce and struck with the half-volley.
It was wide open from both sides, as Costil parried a Calabria header and Ikwuemesi aimed a weak finish at Maignan, but Vincenzo Fiorilli was sent off from the Salernitana bench for pushing Alessandro Florenzi and withholding the throw-in.
