Guillermo Ochoa heroics, helped by the woodwork twice, and a Tonny Vilhena run from his own half allowed Salernitana to snatch a point against Torino and end their losing streak.

The hosts were coming off three consecutive defeats and had Lassana Coulibaly suspended, along with injured Luigi Sepe, Giulio Maggiore and Pasquale Mazzocchi, so new signing Hans Nicolussi Caviglia got his debut from the start with Antonio Candreva returning from a ban. Toro were still missing Pietro Pellegri and Ola Aina, with Wilfried Singo not fully fit.

Antonio Sanabria blasted over from a promising position when Salernitana failed to clear the corner, then Guillermo Ochoa came to the rescue in a similar situation on David Zima moments later.

Ochoa used his legs to deny Nemanja Radonjic and rushed off his line to close down Nikola Vlasic on a smart Karol Linetty through ball, but was glad to see Alessandro Buongiorno’s free header drift wide from a corner.

Perr Schuurs did just enough to stop Boulaye Dia going clear on goal, but it was largely a Torino siege with Ochoa’s gloves stung by Sasa Lukic.

The breakthrough came when Valentin Lazaro whipped in a cross from the right and Antonio Sanabria got in front of Flavius Daniliuc for a diving header from six yards.

Ochoa again had to parry a powerful Vojvoda effort at the near post and was beaten by a Schuurs free header on a Lazaro corner that thumped the far post.

There was some chaos at half-time when there were technical problems with VAR, so the second half had to kick off briefly without the technology, after over 25 minutes.

Salernitana equalised against the run of play, as Tonny Vilhena gathered the ball inside his own half and surged forward, ignoring other options to simply strike from just outside the area to beat Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

It was a totally different game suddenly, with substitute Krzysztof Piatek drilling wide from the edge of the box, then Candreva forcing a save from Milinkovic-Savic.

Ochoa still had to perform heroics, getting down so quickly for a fingertip save on Aleksey Miranchuk’s precise angled drive that was heading for the far bottom corner.

Ricardo Rodriguez twisted and turned on the edge of the area for a low strike that Ochoa somehow palmed onto the base of the near upright.

Deep into stoppages, Rodriguez was unmarked at the back post, but the Wilfried Singo cross was just a little too high for him.

Salernitana 1-1 Torino

Sanabria 36 (T), Vilhena 49 (S)
