Inter consolidated their status as Serie A leaders, reached 103 league goals in 2021 and turned on the style to crush sorry Salernitana 5-0.

Watch the highlights here.

Serie A Highlights: Salernitana 0-5 Inter

It was bottom against top, with 32 points separating them in the standings going into the Stadio Arechi. Matteo Darmian and Joaquin Correa were out injured, while the hosts missed Mamadou Coulibaly, Frederic Veseli and Strandberg, bringing in Vincenzo Fiorillo in goal.

It took just 11 minutes to break the deadlock, Ivan Perisic rose to nod in a Hakan Calhanoglu corner at the near post from six yards.

Denzel Dumfries came so close to a second moments later, his angled drive fingertipped inches round the post by Fiorillo.

Nicolò Barella was booked for a lunge and will be suspended against Torino, while he also blasted over from Marcelo Brozovic’s cut-back.

Delli Carri had an effect charged down on the counter-attack, while Samir Handanovic made a reaction save on Joel Obi from point-blank range on a Franck Ribery assist.

Instead, Inter doubled their lead with Brozovic threading through for Edin Dzeko to roll across first time, the Dumfries strike smashing off the underside of the bar and goal-line technology confirming it had gone over.

That was their 100th Serie A goal of 2021, a new club record and making them the first side since 1950 to reach a Century in a single calendar year.

Dzeko almost added another when Fiorillo flapped at a corner, the header grazing the back post.

After the restart, Danilo D’Ambrosio clipped the far post after a spectacular Barella back-heel flick, then Inter scored a wonderful team move started from their own penalty area with Dzeko and Calhanoglu combining one-touch football to send Alexis Sanchez through on goal.

Lautaro Martinez came off the bench and his free header was over from a corner, but the Argentine was indeed on target for the fifth Serie A game in a row. It was another well-worked team move involving Dumfries, Arturo Vidal and Roberto Gagliardini, sweeping in first-time from 12 yards.

Milan Djuric threatened a consolation, but his header hit the side-netting from a Cedric Gondo cross.

The fifth goal had Calhanoglu now playing in Brozovic’s role in front of the defence. His through ball was carried on by Vidal, whose intended assist for Lautaro Martinez was intercepted by Riccardo Gagliolo, accidentally setting up Roberto Gagliardini instead.

Calhanoglu almost had a sixth, his scorcher beaten away by Fiorillo with the last kick of the game.

4 thought on “Serie A | Salernitana 0-5 Inter: It’s a five-star Inter performance”
  1. I think Inter have scored more goals in their last 2 games then Juventus have done in the last 3 months.
Milan will draw to Napoli but I would not be surprised if they get defeated. Anyways the title is sewn up.

  2. Hopefully we don’t see too many more of these one-sided games.

I’d rather the usual close games we get in Italy, not the regular 4/5/6/7 goal hammerings we see in the “competitve” epl.
