Sampdoria plunged Salernitana further into trouble with a 2-0 win at the Stadio Arechi, as an unlucky own goal and Antonio Candreva counter-attack proved decisive.
Mamadou Coulibaly, Frederic Veseli and Strandberg were on the treatment table for the Stadio Arechi side, while Adrien Silva sat out a ban for Samp, with Mikkel Damsgaard, Maya Yoshida and Ernesto Torregrossa injured.
Vid Belec got his gloves to both a Morten Thorsby hit and the Ciccio Caputo follow-up, but Salernitana were unfortunate on the opening goal.
The corner was taken short and cross came in for Thorsby’s header, but the final touch came off Francesco Di Tacchio for an own goal.
Salernitana tried to fight back with a corner, but as shots were charged down, it broke kindly for Sampdoria to score on the counter-attack with Antonio Candreva from Fabio Quagliarella’s assist.
The hosts came out fighting after the restart, Emil Audero needing a desperate reaction save to deny Luca Ranieri’s acrobatic volley from close range, then got down again moments later to push another snapshot round the post.
Caputo had the ball in the net again on the hour mark, only for it to be ruled marginally offside. Although Salernitana tried everything to get back into the game, Samp defended calmly.
