Inter came back from 2-1 down to end Daniele De Rossi’s perfect Roma record in this six-goal thriller, as Marcus Thuram scored one and forced an Angeliño own goal.
The Giallorossi had won all three games since De Rossi took over from Jose Mourinho, boosted here by the return of Chris Smalling and Sardar Azmoun to the bench, though Evan Ndicka was still at AFCON. Lukaku faced his former teammates and Dean Huijsen was preferred to Diego Llorente ahead of the Europa League, but Simone Inzaghi sat out a touchline ban, with Davide Frattesi, Stefano Sensi and Juan Cuadrado injured.
Stephan El Shaarawy forced a fingertip save from Yann Sommer in the opening 58 seconds, but it was Inter who took the lead in controversial circumstances.
A Federico Dimarco corner was flicked on by Lukaku, finding a Francesco Acerbi header that looped up over Rui Patricio into the far top corner on the defender’s birthday. The referee was called to the VAR monitor to evaluate Marcus Thuram’s offside position, but did not consider it to be interfering with play.
Roma managed to equalise from a set play themselves, the Lorenzo Pellegrini free kick floated in for the Gianluca Mancini header from six yards, back across Sommer.

Pellegrini sparked a counter-attack and spread it to El Shaarawy down the left, whose scuffed finish ended up going in a very odd direction, bouncing off the near post, then ricocheting off the far stick to finally go in.

Inter got it back on level terms after the restart, Matteo Darmian breaking down the right after a quickly-taken free kick and rolling across where Thuram got in front of Mancini to toe-poke in at the near post.
The Nerazzurri also turned it around, as this time Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross from the left was accidentally volleyed in from point-blank range by Angelino, who was trying to prevent the Thuram tap-in. It was the second week in a row where Thuram forced an error like this after Federico Gatti for Juventus.

Moments later, Benjamin Pavard’s control and volley clipped the base of the upright from distance.
Both Bryan Cristante and Acerbi went off with muscular issues, but Lukaku should’ve made it 3-3 when he was sent clear by Pellegrini only for Sommer to get a glove to the ball when he tried to dribble around the goalkeeper.
Lukaku also nodded a Leonardo Spinazzola cross wide, Tommaso Baldanzi hit the side-netting and Spinazzola stung Sommer’s gloves during a late siege.
However, just as Roma were throwing everything forward, they were caught on the counter-attack. Marko Arnautovic burst down the right, rolled it across rather than went for goal, and Alessandro Bastoni got there before Alexis Sanchez to fire in.
