The results this weekend have well and truly shaken up the battle to avoid relegation from Serie A, as there are seven teams in a five-point radius and Sassuolo drop to penultimate place.

The fight to stay in Serie A looks like it could go down to the wire, at least for most clubs, as Salernitana are left six points adrift of everyone else in the table at rock bottom, despite ending the run of defeats with a 1-1 draw against Udinese.

This weekend was a crucial set of fixtures, as the bottom eight all faced off against each other.

Hellas Verona beat Sassuolo 1-0 and the Neroverdi tumble into penultimate place, while Cagliari picked up their first away win of the season for a 1-0 in Empoli, ending the unbeaten record of Davide Nicola on the Stadio Castellani bench.

Frosinone and Lecce had started the season strong, but they too have lost their way in recent weeks and are sliding back into the danger zone following a 1-1 draw.

It is worth remembering that the bottom three teams drop into Serie B.

Only for relegation and the Scudetto, if two teams are level on points, then a play-off will be held rather than using head-to-head record.
