It was a potentially crucial day for the battle to stay in Serie A, as four of the bottom five faced off against each other, with Sassuolo and Cagliari earning victories.

The fixture list provided a fascinating set of clashes this afternoon, as Sassuolo squeezed past Frosinone 1-0 thanks to the Kristian Thorstvedt strike and Kaio Jorge missing a last-gasp penalty.

That was the first win under new coach Davide Ballardini, but despite getting a result, it leaves the Neroverdi in penultimate place regardless.

What it definitely does is drag Frosinone back into the danger zone and if Verona get a result tomorrow away to Lecce, it could see Eusebio Di Francesco’s side plummet into the bottom three.

Cagliari picked up a second consecutive victory, beating Salernitana 4-2, to clamber out of the drop zone and temporarily into 13th place.

They could still be overtaken when Lecce, Empoli and Udinese play, but it is a definite boost for Claudio Ranieri’s side.

Salernitana are now virtually doomed to relegation, already 10 points off safety and that gap could be extended even further tomorrow.
