The Lega Serie A released a statement denying that the Supercoppa Italiana match between Inter and Juventus has been moved from January 12, but does add that is ‘unless other decisions are made.’

The clash between the reigning Serie A champions and the Coppa Italia holders is known as the Supercoppa Italiana – Italian Supercup – and is set for January 12 at San Siro.

Sources told Football Italia this evening that both Inter and Juventus were in talks to potentially postpone the fixture to the end of the season.

This is because the growing COVID-19 wave has prompted the Government to reduce the maximum capacity of the stadiums from 75 per cent to 50 per cent.

Inter and Juventus ask to postpone Supercoppa Italiana

It’d cost the clubs approximately €1.5m in revenue and cause issues for the tickets already sold, as they must also use social distancing on the seating plan.

The Lega Serie A released a statement tonight that does not entirely clarify the situation.

“Following rumours that appeared over the last few hours, the Lega Serie A confirms that the Supercoppa Frecciarossa remains planned for January 12 2022, unless other decisions are made by the Lega.”

This doesn’t rule out a postponement by any means, it just notes that the power to reschedule is purely with the Lega Serie A and not the clubs.

However, if both clubs request a change, it is unlikely the Lega will stand in their way.
