The kick-off of football matches in Italy will be delayed by five minutes to raise awareness about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Every official football match in the country, from Serie A to non-professional leagues, will be pushed back by five minutes this weekend, the FIGC announced.

‘All the players will unite in a single testimony of peace, raising awareness of the respect for human life and the need to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine,’ a FIGC statement read.

“The universal values of sport require us to reflect. We do not want to turn away,” said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina.

“Interpreting a widespread sentiment in Italian public opinion, which also crosses our world, we want to send a clear message: the national football movement is sensitive and very concerned about what is happening in these hours. Sport does not make politics but loudly calls for peace.”
