Monza got back on track with Pablo Mari in the stands, but found it tough to break down 10-man Verona with Carlos Augusto and Andrea Colpani.

This was a real relegation dogfight, as the hosts had lost three on the bounce, but that was nothing compared to Verona’s seven-round losing streak. Pablo Mari is out until 2023 after he was stabbed in a supermarket, but visited the stadium and his teammates for the first time since the attack. Hellas had Pawel Dawidowicz, Federico Ceccherini and Isak Hien all suspended, plus Diego Coppola, Roberto Piccoli, Simone Verdi, Ivan Ilic and Ajdin Hrustic injured.

Watch the highlights here.

Gianluca Caprari pounced on an Adrien Tameze error and saw his shot charged down, as was the acrobatic Matteo Pessina rebound.

Marco Davide Faraoni went off with a thigh injury and Monza threatened again, Carlos Augusto pulled back from the by-line for a Lorenzo Montipò save and rebound charged down.

Magnani was booked for bringing down Dany Mota Carvalho in the final third, as the striker anticipated the defender and they collided. VAR considered it to be a potential goal-scoring opportunity and the referee changed it to a red card after the on-field review, although this hardly seemed like a clear and obvious error.

Gianluca Caprari nodded wide from a Nicolò Rovella cross, while Lorenzo Montipò first rushed out to smother at the feet of Mota Carvalho, then had his gloves stung by a powerful Caprari strike.

Monza finally found the breakthrough when Patrick Ciurria burst down the right and pulled back from the by-line for Carlos Augusto to swing the boot from 12 yards.

Armando Izzo blasted over from the edge of the area and Montipò came flying outside his box to clear a Stefano Sensi cross-field pass off the feet of Mota Carvalho.

Sensi was stretchered off in tears after a sliding tackle saw his ankle get caught under him.

Monza added a second late on, with Andrea Petagna controlling a ball over the top and drawing away defenders before pulling back for Andrea Colpani to sweep in first time.

Michele Di Gregorio only had one real save to make, but it was a special one, getting his fingertips to the swerving and viciously dipping Terracciano curler.

Monza 2-0 Verona

Carlos Augusto 58 (M), Colpani 89 (M)

Sent off: Magnani 26 (V)
