Juventus secured an incredible 2-1 win against Monza, conceding the equaliser at minute 91, but winning the game one minute later thanks to Federico Gatti’s goal.
It was an incredible night at the U-Power Stadium where Juventus secured a hard-fought 2-1 win against Raffaele Palladino’s Monza.
The Brianzoli coach started the game with no centre forwards leaving Dani Mota and Lorenzo Colombo on the bench, while Hans Nicolussi Caviglia started his second consecutive game in central midfield for Juventus with Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic up front.
Giorgos Kyriakopoulos pulled down Andrea Cambiaso in the box, causing a penalty kick for the Old Lady in the early stages. Vlahovic stepped up but wasted his chance seeing Michele Di Gregorio produce a brilliant save to his right. The Monza keeper was even more impressive on the rebound as he frustrated Vlahovic’s second attempt with a full-stretched fingertip save.
It was all useless, however, as the Bianconeri scored from the resulting corner-kick taken by Nicolussi Caviglia who delivered his first-ever assist in Serie A for Adrien Rabiot’s towering header.
With no centre forwards, Monza struggled to find a way through Juventus’ defence and the Old Lady had the best chances in the first half.
Chiesa sent a shot from the edge of the box high and wide, while Gatti had a golden opportunity from another corner kick, but was off-balance so he failed to find the net from a yard. Rabiot could have doubled Juventus’ lead shortly afterwards but Di Lorenzo saved his shot towards the centre of the goal.
Monza changed their approach in the second half by introducing Dani Mota and Colombo straight after the break. The Brianzoli strikers kept Juventus defenders busy inside the box, but still couldn’t win many duels so a Matteo Pessina curler sent wide from the edge of the box was their best chance in the second half until Valentin Carboni came in.
The Inter loanee was introduced at minute 76 replacing Andrea Colpani and he scored his first Serie A goal at minute 91. He cut inside from the right-hand side of the pitch and put in a left-footed cross for Monza strikers. Nobody touched it but the ball became uncatchable for Szczesny once it bounced on the wet floor.
Juventus immediately reacted. Rabiot sprinted past the right flank, entered the 18-yard box and passed it to Gatti who initially didn’t get the ball, but then found the net with a second attempt, getting on the ball even before Moise Kean who was nearby.
Carboni had a second chance to equalise but his long-range shot was inches wide.
Juventus win means the Bianconeri are back to the top of the Serie A table, waiting for Inter’s away fixture at Napoli on Sunday night.
