Lucas Beltran pounced on an absolute howler from the Monza defence and goalkeeper to give Fiorentina all three points.
The Viola found themselves just one point off fourth place, but without injured Nico Gonzalez, Giacomo Bonaventura, Lucas Martinez-Quarta, Gaetano Castrovilli and Dodo. Monza were missing Andrea Carboni, Gianluca Caprari and banned Papu Gomez.
Michele Di Gregorio made an early save on Jonathan Ikone’s curler, but was then far, far too casual playing out from the back with an incredibly weak pass intercepted by Lucas Beltran to tap into the empty net.
Fiorentina really should’ve been 2-0 up moments later when Ikone went clear on goal and dribbled around Di Gregorio, but wanted one more touch, which gave Danilo D’Ambrosio the chance to get back and clear off the line.
Monza tried to get back into the game, but Kyriakopoulos couldn’t make the most of a Patrick Ciurria cross, while Christian Kouame nodded wide for Fiorentina.
Riccardo Sottil’s volley hit the side-netting and Ciurria drilled wide late on.
Monza 0-1 Fiorentina
