Luka Jovic got his first Milan goal, plus an assist for Fikayo Tomori around a marvellous piece of Christian Pulisic skill in the victory over Frosinone.

The Rossoneri were decimated and with confidence rock bottom after a Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund. Olivier Giroud was still suspended in Serie A, with Malick Thiaw joining Rafael Leao, Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Marco Pellegrino, Mattia Caldara, Noah Okafor and Marco Sportiello on the treatment table, so Theo Hernandez became a makeshift centre-back. The Canarini missed Soufiane Bidaoui, Pol Lirola, Riccardo Marchizza and Abdou Harroui, with Luca Mazzitelli not at 100 per cent either.

Samuel Chukwueze saw his strike deflected wide from outside the area, while Michael Oyono rushed forward through the centre and drilled not far past the upright.

Yunus Musah seemed to be offside anyway when running onto the Luka Jovic through ball when the angled drive bounced off the inside of the far post.

Fikayo Tomori was horribly caught in possession by Marvin Cuni, who then tried to dink the on-rushing Mike Maignan one-on-one and didn’t get enough power on the finish.

It proved costly, as Frosinone still seemed to be seething at that wasted opportunity when going behind on the counter-attack. Chukwueze’s cross was nodded away by Simone Romagnoli, but only turned into an assist for Jovic to volley in from eight yards. It was his first goal in the Milan jersey.

Moments later, Christian Pulisic saw his angled drive flash across the face of goal and he got the second straight after the restart.

It was route one, a long Maignan clearance that Pulisic controlled with a splendid first touch, then managed to steer it into the near top corner from the tightest of angles with two Frosinone defenders on the line, all with his right boot.

Maignan also had to rush off his line and counter Arijon Ibrahimovic, with help from Alessandro Florenzi, but Frosinone lost Reinier to what seemed to be a serious muscular injury.

Milan added a third when a corner was taken short for the Theo Hernandez ball to the far post, where Jovic nodded it back from the by-line for Tomori’s tap-in.

There was more to celebrate at San Siro with the return to the field of Ismael Bennacer for the first time since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in May.

Frosinone did get one back with a Milan youth academy product, as Marco Brescianini’s free kick flew past a crowd of players to surprise Maignan into the far bottom corner.
