Roma didn’t have a shot on goal until the 87th minute, but came back from 2-0 down to shock Milan at San Siro with Tammy Abraham’s stoppage-time equaliser.

The Rossoneri were still decimated by injuries, missing Mike Maignan, Ante Rebic, Fode Ballo-Toure, Rade Krunic, Divock Origi, Junior Messias, Alessandro Florenzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Jose Mourinho was again sitting out a touchline ban, with Georginio Wijnaldum and Ebrima Darboe long-term absentees and Rick Karsdorp frozen out, but started a very attack-minded line-up.

Rafael Leao immediately turned Zeki Celik to put in a cross only for Sandro Tonali to glance the free header wide, then turned on the turbo on a counter-attack to eventually be cut off by Gianluca Mancini. On the resulting corner, Olivier Giroud’s attempt was charged down.

Rui Patricio tipped a Brahim Diaz strike over the bar and Milan took the lead from the resulting corner. Tonali whipped it in from the right and blocks helped create a gap from 12 yards for Pierre Kalulu’s diving header, as he shrugged off Roger Ibanez. It was the first Serie A goal Milan had scored with a header since Junior Messias in December 2021.

Paulo Dybala ran out of pitch after gathering an Abraham back-heel flick, then was furious with Nicola Zalewski as the youngster went for goal rather than give him the assist.

After the restart, Leao fired over from a tricky angle after an inspired Ismael Bennacer cross-field pass, then Rui Patricio used his chest to beat away a long-range Theo Hernandez scorcher.

Olivier Giroud’s header was straight at the goalkeeper and Kalulu made a decisive interception as Abraham tried to roll across for a Zaniolo tap-in from six yards.

Alexis Saelemaekers had penalty appeals, but the dinked pass struck Ibanez’s hand when the arm was flush to the body, so it could not be considered handball. Tonali was booked for protesting the decision and will be suspended next week against Lecce.

Roma also wanted a second yellow card to Bennacer for catching the back of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s heel.

Milan doubled their lead with a well-worked move, as Leao cut inside from the left and made the most of a Giroud run to draw defenders away, threading a pass through the gap for substitute Tommaso Pobega to sweep in with the inside of the left boot from 12 yards.

Ciprian Tatarusanu plucked a dangerous Nemanja Matic cross off the head of Abraham, but Roma scored with their first shot on target. A Pellegrini corner was whipped in for the free header of Roger Ibanez, who got away from defenders from eight yards.

Suddenly, the Giallorossi found the urgency they had been lacking and poured forward, which paid off. Pellegrini fired in a free kick for unmarked Matic, whose header was well parried by Tatarusanu, but Abraham was quickest on the rebound from a couple of yards.

Milan 2-2 Roma

Kalulu 30 (M), Pobega 77 (M), Ibanez 87 (R), Abraham 93 (R)

  1. Dear Pioli put Rebic on the right when he’s healthy and convert Alexis to right back

Dear Paolo start preparing to get rid of Dest(who?), Florenzi(who?), Origi(seriously?), Thiaw(who?), Vranckx(who?), Vazquez(who?), CDK(200cm belgian playmaker seriously?) and start preparing to buy Berardi

    No more mistakes dear Paolo

  2. @Vik

Did nothing Other than score twice against a team who don’t know how to mark players in the box?
