It was a thriller at the Stadio Via del Mare, as Bologna fought back twice and then won it in stoppages with Lewis Ferguson’s curler, but Lecce were in a mood to celebrate regardless.
This was a happy occasion, as the Salentini’s last-gasp winner in Monza last week secured Serie A safety. The visitors were without Roberto Soriano, Adama Soumaoro and suspended Nico Dominguez.
Gallo forced a good save from Lukasz Skorupski in the opening minute and Lameck Banda broke the deadlock with a well-taken right-foot volley on the Gabriel Strefezza pull-back.
Bologna equalised moments later, as a lucky ricochet off the Riccardo Orsolini pass sent Marko Arnautovic clear to finish it off with a low angled drive. However, it was disallowed after a long VAR check for an offside in the build-up.
Arnautovic also hit the upright, but that wouldn’t have counted either due to a foul after Wladimiro Falcone flapped the Musa Barrow free kick away from Orsolini.
Bologna did get their equaliser with Arnautovic eventually, Barrow’s cross from the left finding the Austria international for a towering header.
There was a save on Ceesay and moments later Bologna went 2-1 with Joshua Zirkzee turning Federico Baschirotto on the Phyytia assist from the edge of the area.
Lecce refused to give in and a spectacular left-foot volley from 12 yards by Remy Oudin met the Youssef Maleh cross from the left.
Skorupski was decisive again on Alexis Blin, but it was Bologna who snatched victory deep into stoppages with a Lewis Ferguson curler in off the inside of the far post.
