Lazio were incredibly comfortable for well over an hour, but fumbled a 2-0 lead for the late Empoli comeback in a shock 2-2 draw.

Maurizio Sarri’s men were still smarting after fumbling a lead to lose in Lecce midweek, but had Luis Alberto back in the side. Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro was suspended against his former club, with Mattia Destro, Lorenzo Tonelli and Nicolas Haas injured.

The Curva Nord section of the Stadio Olimpico was closed off as punishment for racist chants against Lecce players Samuel Umtiti and Lameck Banda. There was a video tribute to Sinisa Mihajlovic before kick-off, as this was the first home game since his death on December 16.

It took just 79 seconds for Lazio to take the lead, as Luis Alberto’s corner was flicked on at the near post by Felipe Anderson and took another deflection off Ciccio Caputo.

Ciro Immobile fired just over after a Felipe Anderson run from midfield, then Mattia Zaccagni flashed his finish inches past the far post after great work from Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lazzari.

Caputo went down in the penalty area after seemingly tripping over his own feet, while Immobile nodded a corner onto the side-netting.

Zaccagni doubled their lead when he was alert to react to a deflected Felipe Anderson shot, which turned into an accidental assist for him to control and prod in from six yards.

Empoli wasted a golden opportunity to get back into the game when Caputo turned a free header over the bar from Jacopo Fazzini’s cross.

Milinkovic-Savic thought he’d scored with a scorcher from distance, but Guglielmo Vicario fingertipped it onto the upright.

Lazio have conceded a lot of late goals this season and did it again, as Cambiaghi sparked a classic counter-attack from Lazio’s free kick, laying it off for Caputo’s simple finish, his first goal since returning to Empoli.

Having thrown away a lead to lose 2-1 at Lecce midweek, Sarri’s men did it again, fumbling a 2-0 advantage to draw 2-2 in stoppages. A corner was taken short and only cleared as far as Razvan Marin on the edge of the box, who took a touch and curled a wonderful strike under the crossbar.

Lazio 2-2 Empoli
