Serie A | Juventus 3-3 Atalanta: Old Lady fights back in thriller

Juventus gave a strong response both on and off the field, fighting back twice from a trailing position to hold Atalanta in a 3-3 thriller where Ademola Lookman scored twice and Angel Di Maria inspired.

This was the first game since the 15-point penalty for inflated transfer fees to boost capital gains, while they also lost 5-1 to Napoli last week. Dusan Vlahovic, Paul Pogba, Leonardo Bonucci, Mattia De Sciglio and Kaio Jorge were still out injured, but Juan Cuadrado returned on the bench and Adrien Rabiot shook off a muscular problem. La Dea had rediscovered their scoring touch, beating Salernitana 8-2 and Spezia 5-2 in the Coppa Italia, but Duvan Zapata, Davide Zappacosta and suspended Teun Koopmeiners missed out.

It was a very aggressive Atalanta start and they took the lead within five minutes when Ademola Lookman hit a rocket from just inside the area, which Wojciech Szczesny attempted to parry with his gloves, but instead it squirmed between him and the near post. It was a howler from the goalkeeper.

Juve had strong penalty appeals rejected moments later for Jose Luis Palomino’s extremely risky tussle with Arek Milik, then Manuel Locatelli’s half-volley fizzed over the bar and Angel Di Maria scuffed straight at Juan Musso.

Palomino limped off to make way for ex-Juve defender Merih Demiral, but Juve were awarded a penalty after a VAR review when Giorgio Scalvini’s tackle on Manuel Locatelli was clean, but Ederson then clumsily fouled Nicolò Fagioli. Di Maria sent Juan Musso the wrong way to equalise.

Juventus then turned it around, as Adrien Rabiot won it back in midfield, Di Maria’s back-heel flick sent Fagioli down the right and a cross was whipped in for Milik’s splendid low volley from 12 yards.

Barely 40 seconds after the restart, it was 2-2, as a terrible Danilo pass was cut out in the final third, sparking an Atalanta passing move that saw Lookman send Joakim Maehle through for an angled drive across Szczesny.

La Dea turned it around completely when Boga got down the left and floated in a cross for a free Lookman header, as Alex Sandro completely lost his man.

Bremer sprinted back to block Rasmus Hojlund on a strong run, but Juventus clawed it back when Di Maria laid off a free kick for Danilo to drill into the bottom corner, as the routine saw the Atalanta wall split apart. The visitors were furious, as they felt the initial Marten de Roon foul on Locatelli was just a collision.

Rafael Toloi unleashed a screamer from the edge of the area that Szczesny beat away for a corner, while Fabio Miretti scuffed the finish after Demiral gave the ball away.
