Inter retained top spot thanks to an astonishing Federico Dimarco lob from halfway up the pitch and Hakan Calhanoglu penalty to defeat Frosinone.

Benjamin Pavard and Juan Cuadrado were still out injured, but many top names returned after they were rested for the Champions League win at RB Salzburg. The Canarini were revitalised by Juventus-owned Matias Soule, Enzo Barrenechea and Kaio Jorge. It was a special game for Stefano Turati, who was in the stands cheering on his beloved Inter for May’s Coppa Italia Final.

Hakan Calhanoglu whipped in a corner that flashed inches past both the far post and Marcus Thuram, while Turati flew to fingertip a Lautaro Martinez strike out from under the crossbar.

Matteo Darmian made a crucial block as Reinier went to shoot from 12 yards, then plucked the ball off the foot of Matias Soule after a strong run.

Frosinone lost Luca Mazzitelli to injury after 33 minutes and Pol Lirola just about anticipated Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the area.

Inter broke the deadlock with a truly extraordinary goal that will go viral. He gathered inside his own half, was running down the left and spotted Turati off his line, aiming an astonishing lob from just past the centre-circle that flew under the crossbar. It was clocked at 56 metres/61 yards.

Francesco Acerbi had to charge down the strike when Matias Soule got down the right, but within seconds of the restart Inter had earned a penalty.

Thuram went on a slalom through defenders, eventually tripped by Ilario Monterisi, so Calhanoglu sent Turati the wrong way to convert. It makes Calhanoglu the all-time Turkish top scorer in Serie A with 37 goals, beating the 36 for Sukru Gulesin for Lazio and Palermo in the 1950s.

Denzel Dumfries should’ve made it 3-0 moments later, but got it all wrong on the free header from Dimarco’s cross, then Frosinone threatened as Walid Cheddira’s angled drive beat Yann Sommer only to bounce off the base of the far post.

Sommer also flew to palm away a ferocious long-range Riccardo Marchizza strike, but at the other end Nicolò Barella only hit the side-netting from the inspired Dimarco assist.

Arijon Ibrahimovic stung Sommer’s gloves at the back post, while in stoppages Lautaro Martinez failed to make the most of a Caleb Okoli gift and Davide Frattesi tested Turati from a tricky angle.
