Filip Kostic gave Juventus a huge victory away to Inter in the Derby d’Italia, but once again there were major question marks around an Adrien Rabiot handball in the build-up.

This was a massive showdown at San Siro for the top four, especially as the Bianconeri will have their appeal against the 15-point penalty on April 19 and these teams meet again next month for the Coppa Italia semi-final.

Alessandro Bastoni, Milan Skriniar and Robin Gosens missed out for the hosts, while Moise Kean was suspended with Paul Pogba, Fabio Miretti, Alex Sandro, Arkadiusz Milik and Kaio Jorge injured. Angel Di Maria and Federico Chiesa were not fit enough to start, so youth team player Matias Soule got the nod.

Nicolò Barella stung Wojciech Szczesny’s gloves with a long-range strike in the opening couple of minutes, then forced another save from seven yards after a smart give-and-go with Romelu Lukaku.

Instead, Juventus took the lead with a counter-attack when Adrien Rabiot completed a give and go with Dusan Vlahovic and send Filip Kostic down the left totally unmarked, where he had time to stop, look up and drill into the far bottom corner. There was a very long VAR check that ultimately found the potential Rabiot handball in the build-up was not clear and obvious, remarkably similar to his goal against Sampdoria last week.

Moments later, Kostic was again totally clear and this time tried to roll across for Soule, who slipped to turn wide from 12 yards. Kostic almost got a tap-in on Fagioli’s cross, but was denied by Barella tracking back.

Romelu Lukaku’s looping header went wide of the far post, then after the restart Marcelo Brozovic ballooned over after a Dimarco volley was charged down by Mattia De Sciglio.

Kostic rolled across for Vlahovic, crucially intercepted by Mattia Darmian, while Manuel Locatelli made the block after Calhanoglu’s poor first touch on a Barella counter-attack.

Onana needed two attempts to get a Locatelli snapshot under control and Dimarco flashed a ball across the face of goal beyond Lukaku, then Szczesny rushed out to slap a Lukaku cross off the head of Lautaro Martinez.

Chiesa came off the bench and fired wide, but it was end to end when first Federico Gatti made a decisive interception on the Denzel Dumfries roll across for Lukaku, then the move continued on the counter for a Kostic shot deflected inches wide.

Onana got his fingertips to a Locatelli cross, preventing Chiesa from getting the tap-in at the back post. During that move, Chiesa seemed to hurt himself and limped off again after barely 15 minutes on the field.

Edin Dzeko’s volley was charged down by Gatti and Henrikh Mkhitaryan smashed a daisy-cutter just wide.

In stoppages, a corner was cleared as far as Mkhitaryan for a volley that flashed just over the bar, while Max Allegri stormed off into the locker room long before the final whistle.

That means he missed a row that broke out after the end of the match, that saw Danilo D’Ambrosio and Leandro Paredes sent off.
