Serie A hopes to try semi-automated offside from January

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina hopes that semi-automated offside technology will be used in Serie A from January, after it debuts at the 2022 World Cup.

Equipment is playing an increasing role in football after VAR and goal-line technology.

Now a system will provide an automated offside alert to the VAR team in order to make faster offside calls during matches at the World Cup in Qatar.

FIFA announced it was successfully tested in other tournaments and is ready to be launched for the competition.

There will also be a 3D animation to improve communication to fans both in the stadium and watching at home on their televisions.

Speaking at the Social Football Summit in Rome, Italian Federation President Gravina was asked about using this technology in Serie A as well.

“The experimentation will begin the day the technology is complete. I hope that will be from January 4, when the World Cup has concluded.”

Serie A was the first league in Europe to adopt VAR technology on a regular basis.

However, it remains to be seen if this semi-automated alert would resolve the issue that came up during Juventus 2-2 Salernitana, when the VAR booth did not have access to cameras showing Antonio Candreva near the corner flag keeping everyone in play.
