The Bianconeri came close to opening the scoring when Paulo Dybala thumped the upright, but Frattesi finished the sweeping Sassuolo move just before half-time.
Kaan Ayhan’s goal-line clearance denied Juan Cuadrado and McKennie towered above his marker to meet the Dybala free kick for his equaliser.
However, as Juve were pouring forward, they were caught out on the counter by a divine Domenico Berardi pass and cool Maxime Lopez lob.
